Country Geography and Climate
Bulgaria lies in Southeastern Europe, in the northeastern part of the Balkan Chain mountains. It falls within the southern moderate climate zone with influence from the Subtropics. Its position is on the transition between two climate zones which affects the temperature, soil, vegetation and wildlife. They are characterized with Great Variety.
The territory of Bulgaria covers 111,000 square kilometers and features a diverse landscapewhich combines valleys, plains, hills and plateau lands, river valleys, canyons and mountains of various heights. About 70% of the territory is occupied by plains and hilly lands, and 30% - with mountains. The average altitude of the country is 467 meters, which generally decreases from south to north and from west to east. In the central part of the country is located Stara Planina Mountain chain with the highest peak called " vrah Botev " (2376 m). The highest Bulgarian mountains Rila and Pirin are located east of the Struma river valley. The average altitude is 1258 meters, and 60% of their area is with an altitude over 1,000 m.
